Why have goals? Because they give us something to work toward. We may not always meet every single goal we set, but at least we're better off than we were before due to the goals we did accomplish. Unfortunately if you don't have any goals, or your goals are too vague, you may find yourself ten years down the road without anything to show for it. But how do you know what goals to set? There are so many worthy goals out there in the world; it all can get a bit overwhelming. Perhaps one of the best ways to start is by thinking about the different areas in your life for which you can create goals.
There is no perfect way to divide your life into categories, but there are few main domains into which most of your goals can fall:
This domain is all about doing what is best for your body. You only get one body to live in for your entire life so you better take care of it. Some worthy goals for this domain may include: train after work for an hour each day until you can run a half marathon, stick to a diet and get to your healthy goal weight, or even eat a healthy snack instead of a sugar filled one when the afternoon munchies hit.
This domain is all about growing and maintaining healthy relationships. This includes all types of relationships, such as those with your friends, family, and loved ones. Some worthy goals for this domain may include: have a family game night with the kids at least once a week, meet at least one new neighbor a month, or set aside an hour twice a week to spoil your significant other.
This domain is all about prospering and being satisfied with your work and financial situation. Those bills are going to keep on coming every month whether you like it or not so you might as well be prepared for them. Some worthy goals for this domain may include: pay off your credit card(s) in full in three months, do work instead of Facebooking at work for the next quarter to prove to your boss that you deserve a raise, or put $50 each week into your 401k.
This is a broader domain and can include anything from spiritual development to reading more books and from increasing your happiness to learning a new talent. Some worthy goals for this domain may include: read for 20 minutes before bed two nights each week, donate five hours of your time each month to helping out a charity, or spending 15 minutes every day trying to learn a new language.
